In case most of you are not regular readers of The Island, I’d like to bring to your notice a little something that got published in a little section called the “headline” on Wednesday 5th March 2008. Yes, that’s right. The day before yesterday. It had some startling revelations about the Chief Justice. Either he was serious about what he was saying or it was a really big Freudian slip.
I’ve searched high and low but I can’t seem to find an archive of the paper on-line. Then I was going to scan it put it up on the blog, but my office is to tickled about it that it keeps going from hand to hand. I keep finding little groups of people in dark corners giggling with the said paper in hand and they refuse to let me pry it away from them. Who am I to talk, when I got a hold of it I was running left right and centre showing it off so that I could get a few laughs out of people. Now that I’ve lost it without scanning the bitch, I’m left to just tell you the story now with nothing to show you.
Ok, down to the details before they get too hazy in my mind. The Island headline of Wednesday 5th March said the following - “Robbers of PUBIC funds will burn in hell - Chief Justice“. There you have it. I’m sure the Chief Justice doesn’t want to have anything to do with pubic money, if such a thing even exists. I’ve broken it down to possibly mean money that belongs to prostitutes, but even that doesn’t seem right.
What was the editor of the Island thinking? What were the sub-editors on when they were proofing it? What was going on with the journalist who wrote it in the first place. This kind of error is unacceptable. It was a headline for heaven’s sake. I hope they’ve realized the seriousness of a typo that was run as the headline and a quote. Could this go as far as misquoting? deformation of character? I don’t know. What I do know is, I laughed my head off when I read it and then I realized that if one of us made such a glaring error in advertising - we’d lose our jobs. so shouldn’t the media, who should ideally be a more important facet that advertising take themselves more seriously than they do now?
Maybe CJ did mean tht
Here you go… I don’t think
Indi will mind.
Sanjana spotted it too. he he..
Hope this doesn’t end up in the SPAM bin, coz of the links.
Ha. Scan it! For the love of God, scan it please.
A few years back the Daily News had a caption that made me fall off my seat laughing. It read, “Hyundai Donates Balls to SLTA (Sri Lanka Tennis Association)”.
As you can see, Theena, Indi has already put it up. Any idea when the daily news article ran?
Shit, I just saw it. WTF are they smoking?
The Daily News thing was around 2005 if I remember right.
